Prof. Dr. habil. Michael C. Thrun
Honorary Professor of Artificial Intelligence at
Philipps-Universität Marburg
Researcher, university lecturer and managing director of IAP-GmbH
I research, develop and teach methods at the intersection of decision support systems, explainable AI, machine learning, knowledge discovery and data science . My work focuses on identifying meaningful structures in complex, high-dimensional data and translating them into transparent and practically useful support for human experts. I combine interpretable and self-assessing models, human-in-the-loop analysis, clustering, visualization, classification and time-series forecasting. The research is strongly interdisciplinary, with applications in medicine and life sciences, environmental science, archaeology, finance, supply chain management and industrial analytics.
Research & Teaching
This website presents my publications , interdisciplinary research projects , university teaching and open-source software . A unifying goal is to make machine-learning results reproducible, understandable and useful for real decisions rather than treating predictive accuracy as the only objective. My teaching covers Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Knowledge Discovery and Temporal Data Mining and connects methodological foundations with reproducible applications.
Applied Research & Transfer
Through IAP-GmbH , I translate research into prototypes and decision-support systems with partners in medicine and industry. Projects range from diagnostic support and sales or supply-chain forecasting to workforce planning, financial and energy analytics, and insurance underwriting. The transfer is bidirectional: practical decision problems motivate new research questions, while methodological advances are evaluated in real-world settings.
